Boxing Day is a holiday celebrated the day after Christmas, that being on 26th, the second day of Christmas. Though it originated as a holiday to give gifts to the servants and the poor, today Boxing Day is primarily known as a shopping holiday. It is also called “Offering Day”.

Boxing Day was traditionally a day off for servants and the day when they received a special Christmas box from their masters. The servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give Christmas boxes to their families.

Another theory is that it is named after the custom of priests opening alms boxes in churches after Christmas. These held money which had been donated to the poor and needy towards Christmas. Some churches still open these boxes on Boxing Day.

Basically, events have evolved over the years. These days, it is a shopping day and a day to give gifts to loved ones.

Here in Nigeria, it is a continuation of Christmas day and we still wish you the best as always.

Happy Boxing Day
