“Why do designers make clothes that would never be worn on the street, what is the use?”

I had just attended a fashion show, somewhere in the heart of the city.

It was the launching of an event centre and it featured runway fashion.

A very great fashion showcase it was, the designs were creatively crafted with unique detailing.

It was obvious the amount of good work the designers had put into curating the designs and as expected the crowd cheered on so beautifully in approval of this great body of work.

Just as I was exiting the venue, I took a long and quick glance back at the hall, and as I saw one of the models who was yet to change from her outfits, a question dropped in my mind.

“Why do designers make clothes that would never be worn on the street, what is the use?”

And the only answer that kept ringing through my throbbing mind was “fashion is art”.

I still could not fathom how, but I was not going to drop the question, so I delved into research and spoke to a few experts in the fashion industry.

The answers aligned with my thoughts, and I certainly became more aware of this new discovery.

Fashion is the expression of the creative imagination of individuals that involves clothing and appearance, while Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form. We can safely say that Fashion is art, and it is one of the purest expressions of art because it is lived daily.

Fashion is an activity of expression and appearance. So, whether it is being worn, displayed on mannequins, or walked in by models, the essence of Fashion is justified in display.

Outfits for fashion shows are designed to creatively reflect the theme of an event. It could be aesthetically pleasing to the audience but often it is not, and many find it weird and bizarre.

After the show, these pieces reflect the creativity of the designers and even if you were not in attendance at the event, the themes being reflected would easily be understood.

While most museums hold paintings and artefacts, a fashion museum to hold this intriguing piece of the creative mind have been made available in several parts of the world. Some of such museums includes ;

The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)

The Ferragamo Museo (Florence)

The Palais Galliera (Paris)

Our appreciation of Fashion and its regard as a creative skill, would help promote its importance without limiting it to the wearable pieces.
