Sustainable fashion refers to items of clothing that are made to compensate for the various environmental issues that the fashion industry is causing. Do you know that the fashion industry is one of the major causes of environmental pollution in the world? Fashion production makes up 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions, dries up water sources, and pollutes our sources of clean water( rivers and streams). This is a real problem that should not be ignored. Many environmentalists and fashion brands are diving into ways to tackle this issue. Here are ways you can join the movement without sacrificing your style.

Reuse your fashion Items

Instead of disposing of them. Find ways to recreate them into something else that can still be of value. If you are in the creative sector, this should be easier for you to do. But if you are not and you do not have the time to recreate, simply donate it or give it to someone how can still use them instead of trashing them.

Wear What You Already Have

Do not always buy new items of clothing every time you have to. What you can do to keep it stylish is to go through your wardrobe and shop it. You will be amazed at what you can come up with. There are items you haven’t worn in a long time and some that you can style differently.  If you do this always,  you will not have to sacrifice your personal style while being sustainable in your fashion.

Buy Thrift

Thrifting is a good way to look great while on a budget. It not only saves you money but it also saves our earth of new items that will add to our numerous waste later on. ‘The fact is that we already have items that will last us about 40 years on this earth” said a Fashion Editor, Bel Jacobs.  Therefore it is a good idea to continue using what is already here instead of encouraging more production.

Consider Durability

You want to invest in style pieces that you will wear year in and out and still be fashionably relevant. When you think of this, you have to ensure that you buy quality items when you are shopping for new pieces. This way, you will always have items that are strong and durable.

Invest in Staples

Buy items that you can easily pair with other items. They are called Wardrobe Staples. Items like black jeans, a white T-shirt, a leather jacket and a nude pair of shoes. Having these items ensure that you can easily pair them without buying new ones.

Mend your clothes

Instead of throwing them away, if you cant, find a good tailor. This practice saves you money while saving our earth from potential pollutions.

Buy clothes that are made of natural fibres

Examples of natural fibres are cotton, linen and hemp. They are obtained from plants and animals and converted to clothing through man-made processes. The advantages of these kinds of clothing over the synthetic is that they are comfortable to wear, lasts longer and decays easily after their lifespan has been exhausted.

Buy from sustainable brands

In Nigeria, brands like Nkwo, Maliko studios and MxDonna are big on sustainability. Yes, they are more expensive but looking at the bigger picture, it will last a lifetime and you will be saving our earth of more population.
